However, now that I've used it for a few months, I've decided I really like the Gillette Mach 3 better. The blades are much easier to keep clean and there isn't nearly the "drag" when shaving that there is with the Schick Attra II blades the Head Blade uses.

I'm interested in how many others of the tribe have used the Head Blade. Also, for those who have used it, what was or is your experience with it? Do you have any tips for more effectively using this device?

I look forward to hearing from everyone.

It's rather shocking at first, but I just may learn to like it. I haven't committed to keeping it this way, but I'll try for a month and see how it goes. It would be nice if there was some sunshine out there to give it some color. You can really tell that it's freshly exposed. It feels kinda nice.

By LaMont Jones
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE

Bald is beautiful.
When worn with confidence, a completely shaved head can be intriguing, beguiling, alluring.
Consider the pantheon of entertainers, athletes and other celebs known in no small part for handsome hairless heads: Michael Jordan, Patrick Stewart, Ving Rhames, Damon Wayans, Samuel L. Jackson, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Andre Agassi. . . .
In the mid-'90s, supermodel Tyson Beckford single-handedly elevated bald beauty to a new height of popularity in ads for designer Ralph Lauren. The look was so captivating that when Beckford's stint with the label was up, Lauren hired a model who was strikingly similar - right down to the bald head and cocoa skin.
Bald is a preferred look among men of various ethnic backgrounds, and some women have pulled it off as well. Rocker Melissa Etheridge, a breast-cancer patient who recently lost her locks to chemotherapy, sported a stunning, sexy bald head at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony.
Whether by choice or consequence, the shaved-head look may be hipper among American men than ever before.
Fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo, who once wore a ponytail, decided to go bald several years ago.
"Mother Nature pointed me to that direction," said Valvo, 51. "I chose to embrace it because I preferred it to the other choices out there. I think there's definitely something sexy about a bald head."
A bald head is "a stylish choice to make a masculine statement today for young and older men, men of every color," observed Tom Julian, a New York-based fashion and style trend analyst with the Fallon Worldwide ad agency.
"It goes from the sports world to Hollywood to the MTV generation. Why now? Again, personal style statement. Men may not want to live with receding hair, may not want to show gray."
Christopher Rue of Knoxville, Tenn., who has worn close-cut styles, cornrows and short twists, had his head shaved in early January.
"I just like it because of maintenance," said Rue, 23. "It doesn't take long to do. I got tired of having people do my hair, and it was getting hot in the summertime. . . . I don't want my hair looking a mess. I'm liking it bald, so I think I'm going to keep it bald."
Going bald also eliminated early signs of a receding hairline, Rue confessed.
"Everybody pretty much liked it when I got it done," he said, adding that women frequently want to touch it.
"The compliments are real decent," he said, laughing. "Bald heads are a good thing. Don't be afraid to go bald if you've got the head for it.
"If you don't," he added, "keep your hair."

Now, about shaving
? A bald head may appear to be hassle-free, but it requires routine care and maintenance. Here are tips and reminders for those looking to sport a slick bean this summer:
? When shaving your head, take your time, especially around the ears and hard-to-reach areas. Nicks and cuts are unsightly and take time to heal, delaying the next shave and creating a stubbly look. Straight razors tend to cut closer than disposables, but the potential for nicks is higher.
? Electric razors sufficiently shear in some cases. If wet-shaving for the closest cut, use a pre-shave oil to soften hairs and the scalp and to allow the razor to glide more smoothly.
? Shaving is a form of exfoliating skin, which is a good thing. To stimulate circulation, regularly give your scalp a finger massage with natural oils or moisturizers and occasionally apply a facial scrub or mask.
? Avoid using products that contain alcohol because they dry the skin. Use gentler alcohol-free astringents and toners.
? Keep the scalp moist with a cream or lotion. Occasionally use an overnight cream infused with vitamins, botanicals or essential oils to maintain a healthy scalp. Shea, cocoa and avocado butters are excellent skin conditioners.
? Liberally apply and reapply broad-spectrum sunscreen, regardless of your skin color. Skin cancer is on the rise, and bald heads are especially susceptible to the sun's dangerous ultraviolet radiation. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and dermatologists recommend products with an SPF minimum of 15, plus an active anti-UVA ingredient such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789).
? Wear a hat, preferably one with a wide brim to protect the head and neck against sun damage. Eighty percent of skin cancers occur on the head and neck, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
? If you have or develop a skin discoloration on the head, be sure to apply sunblock to prevent hyper-pigmentation. Using fade cream on blotchy or uneven spots at night also can help to even out skin tone.
? If you have vitiligo, melasma, solar lentigo or some other skin pigmentation disorder, a bald head is at increased risk for sun damage.
? If you're considering joining the ranks of the bald, ask a barber or beautician whether baldness will flatter your head shape and facial features.
? LaMont Jones, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
